The title for my previous post emerged from a twitter conversation with Roger Schonfeld about his taxonomy of university presses. There’s a lot in the piece I disagree with but taxonomies are fun and it’s a smart post. I urge you to read it.
Roger identifies a “pressured middle” category of university presses (middle meaning between the new disruptors and HYP/Oxbridge, basically) that probably includes eighty percent of us. Why, I wondered, pressured? Why not resilient? We’re responding creatively to financial pressures, like everyone else, and with five exceptions (one of them Rice, a disruptor) have managed to stay open. Sometimes the scrappy little presses even manage to land on a billboard in Times Square.
